It can be a noun / verb / adjective. It literally means “to fall in the street" and it is one of the most versatile curse words in Cantonese.

In Hong Kong we don’t say jerk or asshole, we say Pok Gaai! 
We also don’t say SHIT! we say POK GAAI LA!
